Largest Music Festival Goes Digital in Support of Voter Turnout

Like everything else, the pandemic reshaped how we vote in America, putting a pause on the mass gatherings that we once attended in conjunction with campaign events. As a result, the #iVoted initiative was forced to pivot from its usual in-person festival and reached out to Mandolin to help put on a fully-integrated and digital experience.

As the leading livestream provider, Mandolin elevated the music festival experience to include a multi-stage platform, seamless ticketing, production, and retail services.

Extending the Reach Through Livestream Capabilities

On November 3, 2020, #iVoted partnered with Mandolin for an immersive election day concert, encouraging people to vote in exchange for access to the massive livestream music event. More than 450 artists performed during the two-day music festival, which included multiple stages, custom merchandise, and interactive elements.

Mandolin’s production team worked hard to create an experience that would align with #iVoted’s goal to promote voter turnout. In keeping with the theme, several of the stages were named after swing states including Georgia and Wisconsin, with artists chosen for each stage based on streaming data, including genre and artist popularity in each location, or if it was their home state. Artists including Billie Eilish, Young the Giant, Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists), Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket either performed or shared an exclusive special message as part of the event.

Seamless Production and Execution

How did it work? To attend the festival, voters had to RSVP to access the show(s) of their choice by taking a selfie 1) with their blank mail-in ballot, or 2) from outside of their polling place, and submitting it online via the RSVP function on the festival's website in exchange for a link to the livestream on Election Day.

Despite the large number of artists involved and the fairly complex ticketing requirements, the #iVoted festival went off without a hitch, with no technical or quality control issues reported during or after the event itself.
